Dreamweaver CS4

Are you a Mac or are you a PC? (from a conversation with David Powers)

“Unfortunately, there isn’t anywhere to read up on the differences between the two.

“As you may know, I write books about Dreamweaver, so I do a lot of testing. Usually, it’s my Mac readers who are very touchy about things being different between the two versions. It's unusual to have a Windows user complain that ‘it doesn't work as well as the Mac version’.

“The differences are very small, but here are the main ones I can think of:

  • You can turn off the Application Bar in a Mac, but not in Windows. It’s because the main menus are on the Application bar in Windows. In the Mac version, the main menus are part of the OS, and not in the program itself.
  • The desktop is visible in a Mac when there are no documents open.
  • Tabs work slightly differently.
  • The buttons in some dialog boxes are in different positions, and some are labelled differently (e.g., Choose instead of OK).
  • The Mac version has a Dreamweaver menu, which has things such as Preferences, About Dreamweaver, and Exit. This is a Mac thing—every program has a menu named after it with similar options.
  • Oh yes, the keyboard shortcuts are different. Mostly, it’s a straight Ctrl/Cmd and Alt/Opt swap; but Ctrl+Space (for code hints) is the same on both, and some shortcuts don't have a Mac equivalent. Anything connected with F10, F11, and F12 is either weird or missing on a Mac, because Apple hijacked those F keys for OS X functionality a couple of releases ago. To preview in browser on a Mac, it’s now Opt+F12.”
